We meet Estela Kun and Stuart Jones, founders of Freedom X Festival, the first outdoor festival about Location Independent Movement that will took place from 14th to 19th on August in a little village of Spain.
Home for Creativity, as Coliving, is the Italian Partner of this innovative event that will host different experiences of remote workers companies, digital nomads, people who give importance to Freedom of movement as important element for a good quality of life.
Dear Estela and Stuart we are very happy to host this conversation on our H4C Storyliving blog.
Starting from the top, I think that the name of the Festival is very fascinating. In what sense it is about Freedom? Can you explain us what is the origin and the goals of this event?
(E) First of all thank you so much for this interview. Freedom X Festival started last year as a two-day conference educational event about the Location Independent Lifestyle. We had the vision of taking this conference style in an outdoor festival environment, and it’s amazing that this year we can host it in a remote Village that we’ve rented out in the north of Spain, in the Pyrenees. Basically, by taking all these workshops and talks in an outdoor festival type of environment you set the possibility to create something really unique, an educational outdoor festival in contact with nature and a beautiful environment. We have tons of different workshops and talks during the 6 days, together with music, dance, outdoor cinema, yoga
meditation in the morning and different sports, it is a very unique way to represent the Location Independent Movement (LIM). As you know, we’re looking for a lot of new ways to create work, with more remote companies and workforces, to be able to travel and work in the same time, but the LIM doesn’t relate just to the way we work, it also gives us a greater understanding of freedom and how we live our day-to-day lives.
So, what Freedom X Festival is emphasizing is the different skill sets, professions, mindsets, businesses that can be created to foster the Location Independent Lifestyle, but also the different aspect of our life such as family, recreation, travel, trying to restructure our daily life to have more flexibility on the number of hours we work each day or in the way we spend our free time. There are a lot of different aspects in the LIM and I feel that the FXF really embodies not just the educational part of it but also the practical part.
One of the objectives is to invite all the leaders and seekers of the LIM who have started amazing initiative, as a remote company working across many different time zones with hundreds of employees and an insurance company that created a special package for digital nomads who are travelling around the world.
By inviting different leaders and seekers to come together, we create not only the possibility to discuss, to create new opportunities, partnerships and synergies, but with all this different people coming together for 6 days sitting, eating and maybe playing volleyball, we create bonds, friendships and much deeper human connections.
In conclusion, the main goal of the event is to inspire and to strengthen the LIM while having lots of fun.
You speak about LIM – Location Independent Movement. Can you give us a description of it?
(S) The Location Independent Movement is the movement surrounding the evolving way in which people are living and working. Now that technology enables a greater degree of freedom to work from practically anywhere an increasing number of people are doing it – not only self-employed entrepreneurs and freelancers, but companies are addressing the issue of workplace flexibility. The Location Independent Movement is the movement related to this evolution…and includes things such as remote work, digital nomadism, coliving, workplace flexibility and a whole range of companies that are sprouting to service the needs of people living with freedom to work when they want, and from where they want.
You have chosen a little village for the second edition of this Festival, can you tell us what will happen in these days in Spain?
(E) We will have hundreds of people coming to this remote village, with 14 different houses and buildings and 250 hectares of land where we’re going to build up a camping site as well as stages. As I told you before, during the 6 days we will have about 80 different workshops and talks facilitated by amazing facilitator and speakers, we have Casey Fenton a founder of Couchsurfing, we have Jason Campbell from Mindvalley, Markus Tornberg from Crossover, we have representatives from different Coliving like H4C, from many remote worker companies, as well as representatives from the digital nomad movement. We will have tons of different educational content. Furthermore, we will have yoga meditation in the morning, different body movement workshops, dancing in the evening and stargazing night led by the NASA astronomer Kevin Hainline. We will also have representatives from governments, for example Varun Sharma from E-residency Estonia. We will focus on all the topics related to this whole movement which is just being born and we hope that through this first global event it will grow with more partners and collaborators. We also hope that in the future we will be able to involve even more the younger generations, including children and kids, since LIM is also focused on the future of education and the possibility to learn how to create new careers with a more balanced life.
This edition of Festival gives attention to pretty new phenomenon called Coliving. In your experience, do you think it is a growing reality? How it will change the way to live the house? What could be the best important things to be a good coliving for LIM?
(S) Coliving is one of the most exciting elements of the Location Independent Movement. A number of coliving places are popping up around the world, and this is going to only increase, as entrepreneurs start to realize its potential to service this growing market. There are a variety of different models but with an underlying theme – to offer accommodation specifically catered for this new breed of traveller.
